How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires?

Rotating tires

Local drivers often ask us at Wesley Chapel Toyota “How often should you rotate your tires?” Tire rotation should be done every 5,000 to 8,000 miles as a general guideline. For precise figures on your new Toyota, check your owner’s manual for manufacturer’s recommendations. Are you still curious about when to rotate tires? Read through this helpful tire rotation guide from Wesley Chapel Toyota, and contact our service center with any questions.

Rotating Tires on RWD and FWD Vehicles

A more specific answer to the question “How often should you rotate your tires?” will depend on the type of drivetrain your car uses. Take front-wheel and rear-wheel drives for example. On a front-wheel-drive car, the engine is sending power to the front tires. But, on a rear-wheel-drive vehicle, the power goes to the rear tires. As a result, the tires getting the most engine power will wear faster than the others because they work harder. Keep these tire rotation tips in mind for FWD and RWD vehicles:

  • Tire rotation needs to be done about every 5,000 to 7,500 miles on RWD and FWD cars. But, check your owner’s manual for precise durations.
  • When performing a FWD tire rotation, you should flip sides when moving the rear tires forward. So, the rear right tire will go on the front left. But, when you move the front tires to the back, you should keep them on the same side of the car.
  • On a RWD car, do the opposite of the process above. That means you should flip sides when moving the front tires to the back positions and keep the rear tires on the same side when bringing them to the front.
  • If you go off-roading regularly, it will impact how many miles to rotate your tires. Chat with the service pros at Wesley Chapel Toyota to get a better idea of a service schedule that is right for you.

AWD Tire Rotation Tips

Since power is sent to every wheel when you engage the engine of an AWD vehicle around Tampa, AWD cars have a different tire rotation pattern than RWD or FWD vehicles. Most AWD tires should be rotated every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, especially if you use AWD routinely in Lakeland. Below is the tire rotation pattern for AWD vehicles:

  1. The right rear tire goes to the left front position.
  2. The left rear tire goes to the right front position.
  3. The left front tire goes to the right rear position
  4. The right front tire goes to the left rear position.

You might want to draw a simple diagram using color-coded arrows, and mark your tires, to help you move your tires to the proper spots. Of course, if you would rather have our professional service team rotate your tires, schedule service at Wesley Chapel Toyota!
